John M. Swiastyn passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 21, 2019 in St Joseph at the home of a friend.
John was born on October 12, 1949 in Hahn, Hessen, Germany to Henry Swiastyn and Lydia (Safone) Vermilyea. In 1951, his family moved to the United States. He attended Christian Brothers, Benton High School, St. Joseph Junior College and Missouri Western State University.
John’s career was an interior designer and color specialist; working for Voss Brothers, Thompson Interiors and later was self-employed. John had a vast array of interests. He acted at the local theaters, painted, weaved and cooked. He loved plants and animals. He could tell fascinating stories and was a wealth of information. His most distinguishing physical feature was his handlebar mustache.
John was proceeded in death by his parents and a sister, Connie. He is survived by a sister, Jeanette McCann, St Joseph; brothers, Michael, Kansas City; Daniel, St. Joseph, nieces and nephews.
There will be a gathering for family and friends to remember John on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. This will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 2004 N Belt Hwy, St. Joseph. Feel free to bring food, photos and share stories of John’s life.
